February Favourites

The month of love has come to an end.

Since Christmas, I’ve had to buy a few new things to wear at the office and also I started using some of my Christmas gifts. Let’s get into it!

Fashion faves

If you haven’t been able to tell by this picture, I loves me a bold print and pattern. If it’s colourful as well, even better!

I adore my pop art/anime/comic strip scarf. I’ve been wearing it with purple skinny jeans and a plain white t-shirt. Unfortunately, when you’re wearing the scarf, you can’t really see the pop art so clearly, but hey, I know it’s there and I love it. I got the scarf as a Christmas gift from Mr. Price. I have no idea how much it costs, but Mr. Price’s scarves go anything between R25 to R70.

Next up is my jellybean printed pencil skirt, also from Mr. Price (R70). My mom bought me this about a week ago and I’m going to wear it to work today. I love jellybeans, so I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this skirt. So fun! Maybe I’ll be Katy Perry in her California Girls music video for Halloween and wear this. 😉

Next we have my lips/mouth printed shirt (Mr. Price R60). I folded it up for the purpose of the photo, because the table I lay everything out on isn’t massive so I have limited space. The arms are cut off, so it’s perfect for summer and you could also wear it to the office. Well, I wouldn’t advice anyone to wear this if you work in a very stuffy, corporate office, but if your work environment is more chilled, then go for it! I’ve been seeing the mouth/lips print everywhere.

The floral shorts are my new favourite shorts. My mom also spoiled me with these. They were on sale at Forever New for R300. They were initially R500. Score! Unfortunately, the summer is almost over here and autumn is definitely in the air so I won’t be able to wear these much longer.

I wore my previous pair of pewter pumps to death so when I saw these (in the pic above) at Woolworths (R160), I snapped them up. At first, they were terribly uncomfortable and really hurt my feet, but now that they’ve been worn in they’re fine. They go with everything and they’re snazzy enough to wear to work or when you’re going out with friends.

Beauty faves

I have included The Body Shop’s Dreams in my perfume collection before, but I got a new bottle for Valentine’s Day. It smells absolutely gorgeous. I think this bottle is the 3rd one I’m going to use. This perfume is so good for every day or even special occasions, and it’s affordable.

L’Oreal Even Perfect Facial Foam is amazing. I’ve reviewed it before as well. I use this to wash my face in the mornings and to be honest, it really does do an amazing job at evening out your skin tone. Love!

Who doesn’t love OPI nail polish? Their ranges of nail colour collections are just so cute! This one is Strawberry Margarita and I’ve been wearing it non stop for two weeks now. It’s such a vibrant, bright pink. Perfect for summer. The name also makes me want to rush out and get a cocktail. Who’s with me?!

Beauty South Africa and Maybelline South Africa sent me the pretty lavender container of powder up there to review for Beauty South Africa’s website so I can’t say much about the product just yet apart from the fact that I really like it and the packaging is very pretty.

Labello Lip Butter is my current favourite lip balm. It’s extremely moisturizing and perfect if you have very dry, chapped lips. The smell is also heavenly, just like fresh raspberries. Read my review here.

OBVIOUSLY Essence Eye Sorbet (R40) is on my list of favourites. I’ve been wearing it almost every day since I first bought it a few weeks ago. Read why here

Random faves

Oh how I love my Cookie and Cupcake Decorating Kit. It’s extremely handy. I also really love my kitchen timer that’s shaped like a pink ice cream (Mr. Price Home, R15). Adorable!

If you’re on the market for a good book about the history of shoes, give Rachelle Bergstein’s book a go. I’ve learnt so many interesting things about the various eras she covers, as well as the history of famous shoe designers.

Tsk tsk Zuri… I really had terrible service. I bought a product from there, wanted to exchange it, had to go back three times to the same shop and every single time the manager wasn’t there, and on the fourth time when the manager was actually there, I had to fight with the woman to exchange my things. Not cool.

What a long post! But I sincerely enjoyed sharing these things with you.

I hope March is a good month!

Bye Bye Split Ends!

I’m going for a haircut today and I’m nervous. In my quest to have healthier, longer hair, I haven’t cut my hair in almost a year and it’s about time that I do it. I wanted to go for a trim in December already, but my hairstylist said that it wasn’t necessary just yet. Fast forward to almost March and I can’t deal with it any longer!

Unfortunately, split ends happen to most of us. Here are some tips to avoid them for as long as possible:

  • Don’t wash your hair every single day! Of course personal hygiene is important, but washing your hair every day will strip your hair of natural oils that actually protects it. Learn to embrace second day hair.
  • Brush your hair correctly. Don’t take your brush and just rip it through from root to tip. Start at the ends and work your way carefully up. It’s also not necessary to brush your hair a million times during the day.
  • Use the right brush. A paddle brush with soft cushioning by the bristles will work well for every day brushing. Be careful if you use hard, plastic combs or brushes. It might damage your hair further.
  • Shampoo only your scalp. Don’t pile your hair on top of your head and scrub everything. Let your hair hang loosely and just wash your scalp. Let the soapy water run through to your ends and rinse. Make sure the water isn’t too hot either, because that will dry out your hair.
  • Condition the ends of your hair and rinse. If you can, make sure you don’t wash out everything. The conditioner will protect your hair.
  • Don’t towel dry your hair the way you would dry your dog after giving him a bath! It will snap your hair, which is very delicate when wet.
  • ALWAYS use heat protector, especially on your ends. If you can avoid using heat on your hair at all, do it. Your stressed locks will thank you.
  • Avoid chemicals and hair dye. It damages your hair terribly.
  • When you first spot a pesky split end, get it trimmed as soon as possible. If you leave it, it’ll keep splitting up further and cause even more damage.

I have a post with more hair tips here. Split ends can’t be stopped, but these tips will ensure that they don’t pop up as soon as they normally would.

Happy Thursday!

Internship Diaries #2

When have you actually interned enough? This question unfortunately doesn’t have a simple answer, because every industry is different, but there are a few things you need to consider that might be an indication that it’s time to either look for a permanent position or to move on to another business/company.

Warning sign #1 – You’re not getting paid

I’m sure many of us have fallen into this trap before where you’re so hard up for work experience that you’re actually willing to work for free to just have something on your CV, but when you start reaching a point like say, you have a year or more’s work experience already, this is just not acceptable anymore. You shouldn’t be carrying a company who can actually afford to pay you something. They’re just taking advantage of you.

Warning sign #2 – Your motivation levels are at an all time low

Sure, we all have days where you’d rather chill by the pool with a cocktail than actually do work, but it shouldn’t be like that EVERY.SINGLE.DAY for months or your entire internship. If you don’t have the motivation to actually work your butt off, then rather quit. Remember, you’re building a name for yourself and often other companies check your references. You want previous employers to say something good about you.

Warning sign #3 – You don’t get any respect

This could be anything from a boss that keeps humiliating you in front of everyone, someone repeatedly hitting on you or people being rude on purpose, because you’re in a lower ranking position. Pack your things and run. Nobody deserves treatment like that.

Warning sign #4 – You’re personal errand girl/guy

When you start having to fill up people’s water bottles, because they’re too lazy to do it themselves then get the hell out of there. Nobody can put that on their CV. Let me take the time to share something that’s happened to me before as well. One of the senior staff members asked me to go buy a candle for his house after he couldn’t have bothered to remember my name either. No further comment from me.

Warning sign #5 – You don’t need to be watched permanently

When you start just almost like instinctively knowing what you need to do and don’t need to be watched or supervised, I’d say you deserve a junior position instead of just an internship. Juniors in companies still receive supervision, but it’s more training and guidance than being babied all the time.

Warning sign #6 – Promises aren’t kept

How many times have I actually heard the story from my friends, classmates and acquaintances that the company they interned for said that there is a chance of permanent employment after say, 3 months, and this just didn’t happen? If you’ve heard this before about a certain company, steer clear.

Warning sign #7 – You’re not learning anything new

This kind of ties in with the previous points. When you’re not learning new skills and you just sit there with nothing to do or you become the personal errand runner, move on. It’s pointless staying there and wasting your time.

These points are from my own personal experience and everyone’s industry and experience will be different. I hope these tips helped some of you guys. 🙂

Jules from For Vanity’s Sake tagged me to do this tag, so let’s get straight into it:

1. What are you wearing?

An oversized t-shirt, leggings and socks. My chillaxin’ uniform!

2. Have you ever been in love?

Yes, I have, but thinking back I think it was more total infatuation really.

3. Ever had a terrible break up?

Yes, I have. Talking about the same person here as with the previous question.

4. How tall are you?

1.53 m or 5’0.

5. How much do you weigh?

50 kg

6. Any tattoos?

Nope, you don’t put a bumper sticker on a Bentley. Just kidding. 🙂 I like tattoos, but I don’t think I’d be able to pull one off or that my skin would react well to it. I have overly sensitive skin.

7. Any piercings?

Just my ears. Nothing special.

8. OTP?

Lily and Marshall from How I Met Your Mother.

9. Favourite show?

I have so many! But at the moment it’s a tie between Golden Girls and The Carrie Diaries.

10. Favourite band?

Red Hot Chili Peppers. I saw them live last year when they were in South Africa. Such amazing performers!

11. Favourite song?

At the moment Take Yours, I’ll Take Mine by Matthew Mole.

12. Something you miss?

University and chilling out on campus during the day.

13. What is your beauty obsession?

14. Zodiac sign?

Gemini. I’m not an avid believer in horoscopes since I get along very well with some people who are star signs that I’m not supposed to get along with, like my two best friends. The one’s a Scorpio and the other a Virgo. We’ve been friends for years.

15. Hidden talent?

I can bake and I quite enjoy it to be honest. My last creation was a chocolate cake that tasted heavenly, but I experimented with food colouring and the icing came out looking awful. I tried saving it with some choc chips and pink sugary decorations and just made it worse. Exhibit A:

16. Favourite quote?

 17. Favourite actor?

Leonardo DiCaprio. Why hasn’t he won an Oscar yet, damnit?!

18. Favourite colour?

Pink, obviously.

19. Loud music or soft?

Both actually. I usually listen to my music loudly in the mornings to psych myself up for work and at work I listen to it softly on earphones when a guy in the office starts blasting his from a laptop.

20. Where do you go when you’re sad?

Definitely my room. I’m in there most of the time to be honest. Not that I’m sad all the time, but I just like hanging out in there.

21. How long does it take you to shower?

Like five minutes tops and that’s if I’m taking my time.

22. How long does it take you to get ready in the morning?

This depends what falls under the term getting ready. For make-up, hair and getting dressed I’m quick as a cat. I think that all takes me 15 minutes.

23. Have you ever been in a physical fight?

Erm, no. Have you read the questions about how tall I am and how much I weigh? Bad idea.

24. Favourite food?

I have quite a few favourite foods now that I think of it. I love Thai, Indian, Turkish, seafood, and pizza.

25. Favourite book?

I have many, but the longest standing favourite of mine has to be the Harry Potter series.

26. The reason you started blogging?

I started a blog, because the industry I chose to work in is creative and I pretty much write for a living. I decided that a blog will be a good thing to put on my CV (or resume´ ) since I write all my own content on here and it’s a good way for potential employers to see my writing ability over a long span of time. I also just really love beauty products and fashion and I get to write about it all the time on here.

27. Fears?

I’m the biggest scaredy cat ever! I’m afraid of bugs and that includes ALL bugs, even butterflies and ladybugs, and especially moths and bees. I’m deathly allergic to bees and I’m not just saying that. I get stung, my throat closes up within a minute and I basically suffocate. It’s happened before and honestly, it’s the worst feeling in the world, even worse than nausea. I’m also afraid of mimes, clowns, dark enclosed spaces and being murdered. Good grief, if I have to get morbid here, being murdered has to be the worst possible way to die! Not just for you, but your family as well! Okay, moving on…

28. Last thing that made you cry?

A few weeks ago when I found out my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.

29. Last time you said you love somebody?

Last night when I was watching Fashion Police. I laughed like a maniac at something Joan Rivers said. 🙂

30. The meaning behind your blog name?

No real meaning to be honest. I combined two things I love and boom!, there you have it.

31. Last book you read?

A Mick Jagger biography.

32. The book you’re currently reading?

Women from the Ankle Down: The Story of Shoes and How They Define Us by Rachelle Bergstein

33. Last show you watched?

Golden Girls

34. Last person you talked to?

My dad

35. The relationship between you and the last person you texted?

The last person I texted is a good friend of mine, Marlene. We talk pretty much every day.

36. Favourite place to be?

The beach

37. Place you want to visit?

Brazil, India, Morocco, Turkey, and of course the homeland, The Netherlands. I’m of Dutch decent so I would love to go.

38. Last place you were?

Well, to be perfectly honest, my house before I left to go to work.

39. Do you have a crush?

40. Last time you kissed someone?

This morning when I said bye to my parents. Does that count?

41. Last time you were insulted?

People underestimate your intelligence and capabilities, because you’re young so more often than you know!

42. Favourite flavour of sweet?

Vanilla, apple or raspberry.

43. What instruments do you play?

I can play piano, but I haven’t in years.

44. Favourite piece of jewelry?

My statement necklaces. Love!

45. Last sport you played?

I played tennis in primary school and high school.

46. Last song you sang?

Take Yours, I’ll Take Mine by Matthew Mole. This song is taking over my life!

47. Favourite pick up line?

Oh gosh, all pick up lines are horrible!

48. Have you ever used it?

No way!

49. Last time you hung out with anyone?

With my parents last night.

50. Who should answer these questions next?

If you’re reading this, then please do the tag and let me know! I’d love to read your answers, but if I have to tag only one person, I tag todreamtolovetolive. Enjoy!

Review: Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters

Yes, yes, the whole world has reviewed these before, but here are my thoughts as well.

Image: vampyvarnish.com

First impressions

I bought two lip butters, Creamsicle and Gum Drop, at Clicks on sale for R40 each. I did not get to swatch them on my hand first, because they were sealed so I picked the colours according to the colour of the tube.

The packaging is quite simple. Nothing fancy going on there, except for the tiny window at the top of the tube that gives you a little sneak peak to what’s inside.

These lip butters also don’t particularly smell like anything, which doesn’t upset me terribly.

The colours of the lip butters appear to be darker on the tube than when you apply it. Both are extremely moisturising and smooth. The lasting power of this product is quite good, but expect a few touch ups during the day.

…and tested

Just as the rest of the world, I really like these products. The only issue I have with it is the shade of purple that Gum Drop is. I’m just scared that because I’m so pale, I look like the blood circulation to my lips have been cut off. The shade is pretty though, but I don’t wear it nearly as often as I wear Creamsicle, which is fast replacing my MAC Crème Cup lipstick. Creamsicle is a bit more orange though, and it isn’t entirely a dupe for Crème Cup, but I like it anyway. 🙂

Review: Nivea Lovely Lips Pink Smoothie

I don’t think this product is available in RSA yet, but I sincerely hope that it will be at some stage. I got this gorgeous smelling lip smoothie from my bestie in South Korea. She doesn’t like products leaving pink tints on her lips so she gave it to me.

First impressions

I was immediately drawn to the packaging of this lip product. It’s bright pink, streamline and has tiny pics of butterflies on. What’s not to love? The smell is also quite unique. I like that it smells like a delicious cold glass of mixed berry juice, but I’m not sure it’ll appeal to everyone. A guy who works with me asked me if I wanted to eat it and said he’d pay me R5 if I did. I politely declined.

I was given this product beginning of January already. I haven’t been using it every day, because it leaves some colour on your lips and sometimes you just want a plain nude lip instead of a pretty pink one. But the days I have wanted to rock pink, I’ve been using this. Not only is it pretty and understated, but it’s moisturising as well. It glides on effortlessly and you don’t need a lip balm underneath it to be able to wear it effortlessly.

…and tested

I would recommend buying this if you’re in the market for a tinted lip balm. The effect is great for an every day look, it’s moisturising and smells nice. It also doesn’t feel sticky at all, but it doesn’t last long. You will have to touch up regularly during the day.

I had a look on Amazon for the price, and I’m not sure if that’s how much it normally costs, so have a look at your local store. Amazon’s prices on this product ranges from $7 to $30. Confusing? Yes.

Happy Hump Day!
