May favourites <3

I can’t even believe how fast this year is going by! My birthday is in two weeks and it’s literally slap bang in the middle of the year and in the dead of the South African winter meaning summer will soon be here again.

But let’s get into the things I’ve been loving for the month of May:

MAC Cleanse Off Oil

I LOVE this product and if you think BioDerma works well, you haven’t tried this cleanse off oil yet. It takes your make up off without any scrubbing. It literally cuts straight through waterproof eyeliner and dark lipstick without even leaving behind stain and best of all, it doesn’t dry out your skin so if you don’t feel like using moisturizer afterwards, you don’t have to. Oh and it smells vaguely of oranges. Yum!

MAC Select Cover-Up (NW20)

I’m in love with this concealer. It covers up my dark circles underneath my eyes without being cakey or creasing.

Dermalogica Multi-Active Toner

This is great for during the day when your skin needs a pick me up. You just spray it on and leave it to soak in. The smell isn’t fantastic but I can live with it.

Dove Go Fresh Fresh Touch shower gel

I have damn dry skin year round so if you have the same problem then consider buying this shower gel. It’s creamy and doesn’t dry out your skin. I love the smell as well. The one I have pictured here is Cucumber and Green Tea scent. The combo sounds weird but it’s very light and fresh.

Labello Lip Butter in Vanilla and Macadamia

I’ve raved about the Raspberry one before and I recently finished up the little tin’s delicious content so I bought a different flavour. This is great for winter and dry, chapped lips that need extra care. It does however leave a bit of a white cast but it disappears as soon as the product absorbs into your lips. Just don’t try eating this, it tastes like hell. Not that I’ve tried… 😉

Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Melted Berry

I’ve mentioned a million times before how much I love these tubes of loveliness. I’ve been wearing my Melted Berry shade a ton since the weather became cooler. It’s such a stunning shade.

China Glaze Nail Laquer in That’s Shore Bright

The name doesn’t disappoint, it sure is very bright but it’s beautiful and lasts long on your nails.

OMI – Cheerleader

I’ve tried to recreate the girls in the music video’s dance moves. I nearly ripped something. Good luck to you if you should try, but rather just don’t.

What have you been loving this month?

Powder power

Make up brush

Hello dolls!

So this morning while I was getting ready for work, I realised I’m running very low on my beloved Estee Lauder Country Fresh Powder. It’s a loose powder in a big, clunky container but it works incredibly well and matches my skin tone perfectly.

The problem I’m facing now is I don’t think they make that particular product anymore.

What powder would you suggest I use next? What’s your favourite face powder?

XO Carina

I love Pretoria!

Lately, I’ve gotten a few very strange direct messages from total strangers on Twitter asking me bizarre questions like how I manage to blog in Africa, do I have electricity and running water etc.

So for those of you who think that South Africans live in mud huts, have lions for pets and wear animal skins for clothes, first of all: LOL and secondly we don’t. Some pictures of the stunning city I live in:

I really love Pretoria and there is a distinct possibility that I’ll have to move to Johannesburg for my new job.

Here are some of the reasons why I love Pretoria and don’t really want to leave:

  •  I’ve lived in Pretoria all my life so I know the place like the back of my hand.
  • My family still lives here.
  • Some of my closest friends are in Pretoria.
  • There isn’t a fraction of Johannesburg traffic in Pretoria.
  • It’s a beautiful city with all the Jacaranda trees.
  • The weather is very nice. It’s quite warm most of the time.
  • The cost of living in Pretoria is much lower than in Johannesburg or Cape Town.
  • Two of my favourite bloggers live in Pretoria. Check out Chicara’s blog here and Luzanne’s over here.
  • And some of my other faves not based in Pretoria include: My Hartjie, Frankly Charlie, I’ll Take It All and Make It Rayne.

What do you love about your home town/city?

Coco Chanel started it!

It never ceases to amaze me at how OBSESSED people are with being tanned. How many articles have you read in gossip magazines about celebrities overdoing the fake bake and looking like Oompa Loompas on the red carpet?

Apparently the obsession with being tan started with famed designer Coco Chanel when she went on holiday and came back with a healthy glow from spending time in the sun. Before that, being untanned was the way to go since being tanned was associated with doing hard labour outside in fields. Not glamourous at all. Which reminds me, I’m by no means saying skin cancer is Coco Chanel’s fault. This post is about looking after your skin and realising it’s not good frying away in the sun in order to be fashionable or more beautiful. The headline got your attention though didn’t it? 😉

What worries me about the tan obsession is that I agree it looks good when you’ve gotten a bit of sun and it hides a multitude of sins. Cellulite looks better, you don’t see unsightly veins so easily, you look slimmer and legs look longer etc. but I read an article on BuzzFeed this morning about what too much sun and UV rays does to your skin.

The picture is quite bad and it got me thinking about the importance of wearing sunscreen.

In fact, I have a few friends who are also obsessed with the sun and I can actually see lines on their skins from being exposed to the rays too much and these are beautiful girls who are my age (24 or 25ish). We’re not supposed to have lines and wrinkles like that on our faces just yet.

So since it’s winter here but summer in most other parts of the world I thought I’d share some tips on how you can protect your skin:

  • Wear suncreen – Duh.
  • Wear protective clothes like a hat and thin yet longer sleeves.
  • Pay attention to any new moles on your skin. Don’t just leave it and think it’ll go away.
  • Remember your sunglasses.
  • Remember that the sun ages you and you don’t want to look like a cheap handbag by the time you’re 40. You can’t reverse the damage. Having healthy skin is more important than being tanned.
  • Rather get a spray tan than lying on a tanning bed. The UV rays are really bad for you.

Mother’s Day gift ideas

Frosted Cupcake with pink fondant flowers and roses

Cue the cheesy cards and ‘I ❤ Mom’ mugs bought in a hurry at a petrol station.

Or if you’re slightly more prepared, a box of chocs and a bouquet of flowers.

But if you’re feeling that maybe your mom already knows what she’ll be getting this year because she gets the same thing every single year, it’s time to have a look at my very special gift guide for your mumsy:

Hummingbird feeder

If your mom likes gardening like mine does, why not get her a cute bird feeder? I know it’s strange, but my mom would love a gift like this. She also enjoys those little wooden houses for woodpeckers so there’s another brilliant idea for you right there. 😉

A scarf

The weather is getting chilly now so get your mom a beautiful scarf. There are beautiful ones that are mom appropriate at Poetry.

Instead of getting her the usual bouquet of flowers, why not get an orchid? They might be slightly more expensive but they’re going to last a lot longer than the bouquet and they’re very elegant. Also, they come in a huge arrangement of colours.

What woman doesn’t like a beautiful necklace or ring?

For my mom’s birthday, we got her a stunning navy blue leather handbag from Accessorize. She’s been using the bag every single day since and her birthday was in February. Grab your mom some arm candy this Mother’s Day!

Perfume is a gift that might be a tad on the pricey side but it’ll last a long time and every time your mom wears it she’ll think of you. Guess who’ll get the best daughter award?

A book

If your mom likes reading get her a book, but make sure it’s a book on one of her interests.

If all else fails, bake (or buy) her some cupcakes. Who doesn’t like cupcakes?!

There’s still a bit of time left to go get your mom the perfect gift so go go go!
