Dry hair solutions

IMG_5866

Guys, it’s full blown winter here. I snooze my alarm at least twice in the mornings just to lie in bed a teensy bit longer before getting up, making coffee and getting ready for work. I hate getting out the shower or bath since it’s even colder then and my skin is even drier than usual.

But it’s not just my skin that is complaining about the dry icy cold, it’s my wavy colour treated hair as well.

I have quite a difficult hair texture to deal with. It’s thick, wavy, a bit coarse to the touch, has a frizzy element to it and also has a mind of its own. I wash it once a week (my hairdresser’s recommendation) and I spray dry shampoo on the roots in between washes to keep it from becoming an oily mess.

Not washing it that often and not using any heat treatment on it has helped a lot, but it hasn’t kept my winter woes at bay.

Normally I use silver shampoo but I’ve discovered an amazing new shampoo that I use during the winter and I promise you I’ve never looked back. If you have wavy or curly hair, it makes your curls softer yet more defined and it quenches thirsty hair quite a bit.

Another plus is that it’s paraben and sulphate free. WOOHOO!

The downside, it’s pricey.

I’ve had my bottle Hask Macadamia Oil shampoo for a while and if I remember correctly it goes for about R110 a pop at Clicks. I haven’t purchased the conditioner yet since I make use of my silver shampoo’s conditioner to keep my blonde ends from going brassy.

Here what I do to my hair after working up a lather, rinsing and repeating:

  • I let my hair air dry or if it’s particularly freezing, I walk around with a towel on my head until my hair is damp
  • I work about 3 drops of TreSemme’s hair oil into my strands and leave it
  • When my hair’s almost completely dry, I gently comb it through with my bamboo comb from The Body Shop.

And voila!

My hair is soft and shiny.

Do you have any holy grail hair products?

Clicks Beauty Fair is on, baby!

Image

Oh yes… It’s that time again… Say it with me: THE CLICKS BEAUTY FAIR IS ON!!!

From the 13th of June until the 9th of July, that is. Ah yes, this always excites me so, since you can get some really good deals out of it.

Today, I went for a leisurely stroll through the aisles, as one does, on a quest to try out a new silver shampoo. I spotted my usual Lee Stafford, but decided to try out John Frieda Sheer Blonde instead, so I secretly opened the tubes and had a sniff. I always do this, because the way a product smells is literally one the most important things for me. I hate using products that don’t smell nice, because I always think that’s what other people will smell when they come near me and it’ll overpower my perfume. A bit dramatic I know.

Silver shampoos and their matching conditioners are really expensive, even for a girl with a job (that’s me), but I decided to just bite the bullet, because I only use silver shampoo once a week so it lasts forever and really does make my lighter ends look much better.

So as I was paying, the man told me that because of the Beauty Fair, I get another conditioner free. Here’s our dialogue:

Man behind counter: “Ma’am, because the Beauty Fair is on and you purchased matching shampoo and conditioner, you can go get another conditioner for free.”

Me: “Free?” (like this is some foreign concept)

Man: “Yes ma’am, free.”

Me: “Like for free, free?”

Man: “Yes, completely free.”

Me: “Seriously?”

Man: “Yes, seriously.”

Me: “Any conditioner?”

Man: “Yes, any conditioner.”

Me: “Even this one?”

Man: “Yes ma’am.”

Me: “WOOHOO!!!”

I don’t think I’ve ever skidded around a corner that fast to get back to the hair aisle. Sad, but true.

So I got a pretty expensive conditioner (R95,00 to be exact) for free, and next time I only have to get the matching shampoo. Happiness for days!

Be sure to grab a little Clicks booklet at the entrance or at the counter. There are seriously some great deals in there.

Happy shopping!

How to: Preserve a Blowdry

Image

Preserving a blow dry can be quite a daunting task, but there are ways to do it!

What you’ll need:

  • Dehumidifying spray,
  • A wide tooth comb,
  • An elastic hair band,
  • A shower cap;
  • Any random plastic shopping bag.

Start by sectioning your hair and spraying dehumidifying spray on the various pieces. Let the spray dry.

After the spray has dried, take a wide tooth comb and carefully brush through your hair to undo any knots or tangles. Some dehumidifying sprays can make your hair feel crispy like hairspray sometimes does, so it’s important to spread the product through your tresses.

Once you’ve done that, put your hair up in an elastic hair band and put the shower cap over your hair. Tuck in any loose pieces that escape.

The plastic shopping bag is optional, but to make extra sure that no moisture gets in under the shower cap to ruin your blow dry, put it on your head over the shower cap, and tie the handles of the plastic bag into a knot at the nape of your neck. Be sure to not suffocate yourself while putting the bag on.

Take your shower or bubble bath, and enjoy your perfectly preserved blow dry!

Review: Wet brush

Image

I bought my wet brush from my hairstylist about 3 weeks ago and I’ve been using it on my hair after I’ve washed it. The bristles are so soft and rubbery, it doesn’t pull or break your hair at all, and it’s fantastic for getting knots out without destroying your hair in the process. The brush is also very easy to clean.

It’s also quite small and dinky so either if you’re like me, you’ll lose it constantly or it’s very handy for just chucking it into your handbag, and carrying it around with you. It can obviously also be used on your dry hair.

Image

This cute little brush is quite affordable. It was about R40, which is approximately $4, and it’s also available in baby blue, beige, black and white.

You can purchase these from DisChem as well for about R9 (about $1), which really made me miff about buying mine for R40, but these brushes are honestly great and I’m glad I bought one.

2013 Favourites

With 2014 edging closer, it is time to share the many products that I have loved throughout 2013.

I am quite a product junkie. I tend to change everything from my toothpaste right through to my body lotion every single time I run out of a specific product and have to go shopping, but these products I have used over and over again and will probably continue buying them in the future.
