Dry hair solutions

Guys, it’s full blown winter here. I snooze my alarm at least twice in the mornings just to lie in bed a teensy bit longer before getting up, making coffee and getting ready for work. I hate getting out the shower or bath since it’s even colder then and my skin is even drier than usual.

But it’s not just my skin that is complaining about the dry icy cold, it’s my wavy colour treated hair as well.

I have quite a difficult hair texture to deal with. It’s thick, wavy, a bit coarse to the touch, has a frizzy element to it and also has a mind of its own. I wash it once a week (my hairdresser’s recommendation) and I spray dry shampoo on the roots in between washes to keep it from becoming an oily mess.

Not washing it that often and not using any heat treatment on it has helped a lot, but it hasn’t kept my winter woes at bay.

Normally I use silver shampoo but I’ve discovered an amazing new shampoo that I use during the winter and I promise you I’ve never looked back. If you have wavy or curly hair, it makes your curls softer yet more defined and it quenches thirsty hair quite a bit.

Another plus is that it’s paraben and sulphate free. WOOHOO!

The downside, it’s pricey.

I’ve had my bottle Hask Macadamia Oil shampoo for a while and if I remember correctly it goes for about R110 a pop at Clicks. I haven’t purchased the conditioner yet since I make use of my silver shampoo’s conditioner to keep my blonde ends from going brassy.

Here what I do to my hair after working up a lather, rinsing and repeating:

  • I let my hair air dry or if it’s particularly freezing, I walk around with a towel on my head until my hair is damp
  • I work about 3 drops of TreSemme’s hair oil into my strands and leave it
  • When my hair’s almost completely dry, I gently comb it through with my bamboo comb from The Body Shop.

And voila!

My hair is soft and shiny.

Do you have any holy grail hair products?

July favourites

Almost Spring!

Almost Spring!

Wow, my apologies for being super late with this one! These past two weeks have truly been weeks that I don’t want over again, but that’s really a post for another day.

My favourites for this month is going to be fairly short and sweet. Le’ go!

DKNY Golden Delicious

Wawaweewa! I’ve been using DKNY Be Delicious perfume for quite a while now and I only recently bought this bottle of golden greatness a week ago on a serious special, but I love it! The smell is just fantastic and the packaging is amazing. Top notch.

The Vitamin E range from The Body Shop

I bought the Vitamin E Aqua Boost Sorbet and the matching night cream. I ended up only using the night cream and giving the Aqua E Boost Sorbet to mister S who initially complained about the pinkness, but he got over it and is now using it. He loves it and his skin does too.

Cotton On socks

They are ridiculous, but I love them.

Jay Jays head band

I’ve had it for a while now, but it’s recently been icy so I’ve been wearing this to keep my ears warm and it really makes a difference!

I really love this shop. They have the cutest accessories. I was there last week with my mom and I ended up buying hair bows (pictured above).

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

Everyone’s heard of this iconic movie, but how many people have actually watched it? I downloaded it (yay for piracy) and I really loved it! It really is such a classic and sweet movie. Two hours long though, but worth it.

Yankee Candle Vanilla Cupcake

Apparently this is Yankee Candle’s bestseller and I’m not surprised. It smells exactly like a freshly baked batch of cupcakes. I was feeling a little down and when I opened one of my bags one night, it was carefully hidden inside. Mister S is just a real sweetheart, isn’t he?

Wimpy coffee mug

Wimpy has a special with one of their breakfasts at the moment. When you order the breakfast you get an adorable mug with it. There are so many to choose from, but I liked this one with the lipstick mark the most.

Hazelnut lattes

Hi, my name is Carina and I’m addicted to hazelnut lattes.

The fact that my best friend is back in town

My best friend in the entire world went to South Korea last year for work and she came back last week Monday. Words can’t describe how happy I am to have her around the corner from my house again. Welcome back, Jen! ❤

Is it summer yet?!

Have you ever sat in the dead of winter with a warm cup of cocoa watching some lonely snowflakes drifting to the ground through the window, and thought to yourself “I wish summer would just come already?!”

Even though snow is an uncommon occurrence in Southern Africa where I stay (which then makes watching snow flakes kind of redundant), I’ve often wished that summer would come sooner after angrily coming in from outside, feeling like I’ve gotten frost bite from just being outside in the cold, dry air for five minutes.

When I think of summer, I think of golden tans, cute dresses, bright pops of colour, wavy beach curls, tall drinks and hours of fun in the sun. Doesn’t that just make winter sound boring already?

So to cheer myself up about winter since it’s only really started getting super cold here now, I decided to do a post about summer and a summer outfit, but before I even get into that, let me share a little secret with you that you have to keep in mind if you live in the US.

I’m the first person to tell you that I’m straight up addicted to the Internet. I can spend hours surfing the net and finding all kinds of awesome new sites, and one of those sites that I’ve come across is Raise.com, and also when they contacted me to participate in their Closet Swap campaign, I was all ears!

Raise.com is a platform where you can buy or sell gift cards. Signing up takes less than five minutes, and it’s free. Delivery and shipping is also free, but unfortunately for now, their services are only available in the US. The gift cards range between various price ranges, and the brands listed that accept these gift cards are literally endless.

Personally, I love gift cards and I love giving them as gifts especially for people who already have everything or someone you don’t know that well, but I digress. Since discovering Raise.com, I’ve decided to base my summer look here on some of the brands I saw listed on their website. Let’s jump straight in! I’ve put all my photos in a gallery to make it easier to go through. Enjoy!

Firstly, no summer look is complete if you don’t exfoliate and then moisturise with a shimmery body lotion. I adore The Body Shop’s exfoliators, especially their raspberry scented range. Yum! Victoria’s Secret has amazing shimmery body lotions, and I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t buy one when I was in Dubai. Don’t repeat my mistake! I didn’t take any pictures of the lotion, because the camera didn’t pick up on the sparkles so no need to just post a picture of my arm…

Secondly, you have to have a coat of bright nail polish on your nails. My favourite nail polish is OPI, and you can purchase any colour imaginable from Sephora. I’m wearing OPI’s Strawberry Margarita, and the glittery polish is Barry M’s Rose Quartz Glitter.

I love larger watches, and my watch is Guess. I got it as a birthday present this year and I wear it every single day. My handbag is also from Guess and also happened to be a birthday present from last year.

My skater dress is from Mr. Price, which is a South African store. However, I do declare that Forever 21 has absolutely stunning summer dresses at affordable prices. I love wearing dresses in summer. The baby blue pumps are also from Mr. Price, but I’m sure you will also be able to find similar one from Forever 21 or Aldo if your budget allows it. The cardigan is from a SA shop called Vertigo.

I adore statement necklaces and the bright floral one is definitely one of my favourites. I also got it from Mr. Price (it’s affordable okay?!), and again I know that you get lovely statement jewelry from Forever 21.

My make up is quite simple. I used Maybelline 24Hr Colour Tattoo in On and on Bronze as eyeliner, and my neon lipstick is MAC Cosmetics‘s Candy Yum Yum. Please excuse my woolly sweater and scarf, it is winter after all this side of the world. 🙂 My favourite summer perfume is DKNY Be Delicious Fresh Blossom.

All the brands I’ve mentioned here are available on Raise.com. You can thank me later. 😉

Go like Raise.com’s Facebook page here or follow them on Pinterest. Their pages are pretty darn cool.

Autumn Beauty Wishlist

As mentioned in my previous post, it is definitely autumn this side of the world and winter is rapidly approaching, which is why I have a winter/autumn wishlist. I’ve chucked out quite a lot of my old clothing from last winter and I’m going to do the same with my beauty products, *sob*, so the time has come to keep an eye out for some replacements.

Zoya nail polish – Miranda

I went for a Zoya manicure last week and I’m extremely impressed with it. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but I’d rather pay a teensy bit extra than have my nails chipping every second day. Ain’t nobody got time fo’ that! I’m in love with the Pixie Dust range. My favourite shade is Miranda.

YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch Highlighting Pen

I know I’m a bit late with getting on this bandwagon, but I honestly love how this makes your skin look. I’ve been too afraid to approach any YSL cosmetics counters, because I know I’ll just want everything, but I saw a girl getting her make up done at the counter a week or so ago and the make up artist used this pen on her and my heart just melted.

The Body Shop Grapefruit Shower Gel

Grapefruit is one of my favourite fruits so having it in liquid shower gel form? Win!

The Body Shop Blueberry Body Butter

Winter is around the corner so therefore a good, thick, moisturising body butter will come in handy for when your skin rebels against the cold weather.

Maybelline The Rocket Volum’ Express Mascara

Maybelline mascaras are the bomb. Seriously, they make your lashes look so much thicker and longer. Who can say no to that?

Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy La Fleur

This is more of a spring/summery perfume, but I have to fight to restrain myself from taking all the samples whenever I see it somewhere. It’s so fresh and florally, and the bottle is gorgeous.

Marc Jacobs Bunny Make up Bag

I know this is not entirely a beauty staple, but come on, it has bunnies on and it’s Marc Jacobs!!! Love at first sight.

The Body Shop Honey Bronze Shimmer Lip Balm

I can’t get over the packaging! It creates a gorgeous shimmery shine on your lips and is perfect for just wearing it on its own or over a lipstick for a more glossy finish.

MAC Cosmetics Snapdragon Lipstick

This lipstick is part of MAC’s A Fantasy of Flowers Collection, and it is beautiful. It reminds me quite a lot of Pink Nouveau, but is more purpley. Plus, I really love the name.
