Hi July

julyOh hi there July!

Hopefully the weather goes from being icy to just cold this month.

South African beauty and fashion trends

The South African national flag

It’s full blown winter and icy cold here. Please note that icy cold to me is 20 degrees and that’s quite warmish for a winter day and I still freeze to death.

I’ve been paying attention to what the girls are currently donning on the streets. No, I don’t mean prozzies, I mean like street style like what my colleagues wear and what girls wear at the mall for example.

In general most South African girls are quite chilled and you won’t easily see over the top Barbie doll looks. Most of us seem to be happiest in our flip-flops and cute t-shirts.

So it comes as no surprise then that what I’ve been noticing is a serious no make up, I-woke-up-like-this trend. Not when it comes to hair though, but definitely the make up. Big lashes with lots of coats of mascara, no eye shadow, a teensy bit of blush and nude or clear gloss is the way to go.

Girls seem to be wearing a lot of high ponytails as well. They straighten their hair until it’s pin straight and then throw it back into an effortless, slicked back ponytail. Another hair trend I’ve noticed is having one streak of blue, purple or green in your hair. I’ve also seen a seriously cool pink dip dye, but the most popular colours are blue, green or purple. At least the old ladies have now stopped doing that, because that was just sad.

Like I said, it’s winter and still I see morons wearing shorts. Seriously, go home and put on some jeans, and stop wondering why you keep getting a cold! But I digress.

Thick woolly scarves seem to be the in thing. Thinner and lighter ones have taken a backseat although I still wear mine all the time. I just love patterns and bright colours.

With regards to tops, I’ve been seeing a plainer colour palette like lots of black and white. Jeans, especially skinny jeans, are a must and I haven’t been seeing a lot of leggings or tights. For that matter, I haven’t been seeing girls wearing skirts or dresses with tights either. Jerseys/sweaters are always in style during the colder months, but the jerseys aren’t chunky at all.

Pumps and boots have always been the thing to wear in winter. We don’t really get a lot of snow in SA, especially in my neck of the woods, there’s no snow. Just freezing cold winds coming in from the Cape so people still wear pumps in winter. Girls don’t wear sneakers all that much in winter, but the guys do. Any ballet pumps go and the boots are usually up to the knee or slightly lower. You very rarely see people wearing ankle booties.

With regards to accessories, girls wear thicker scarves like I mentioned earlier, but earrings are kept quite simple. No chandelier earrings or anything crazy. No crazy bracelets either.

The overall trend seems to be less is more, which I have to say, is quite refreshing.

Autumn/Winter perfumes

Leafs are changing colour and falling, temperatures are dropping, and hot chocolate is making its annual appearance on my grocery shopping list. Autumn is in the air.

With the change in season, your summer perfume might be too light for the new weather. Here are some perfumes to consider using during autumn and winter:

Chanel No 5

This amber coloured perfume is one of those scents that you’ll either love or just hate and had celebs like Nicole Kidman and Brad Pitt representing it. Whenever I smell it, it reminds me of my mom. She absolutely adores it. This perfume is quite heavy and strong so either go slow with it or try an alternative that smells lighter and is more appropriate for a younger person like Elizabeth Arden’s Fifth Avenue. We got my mom a bottle of Fifth Avenue for her birthday this year. Chanel No 5’s bottom notes are amber, sandalwood and musk, which gives it that distinct smell.

Dolce and Gabbana The One

I’m in love with this perfume’s packaging. It’s just so simple yet so gorgeous. The One’s bottom notes are vanilla, amber and musk. Even though some of the base notes are amber, the actual liquid isn’t nearly as dark as Chanel No 5’s. This perfume is also much lighter and can definitely be worn on a daily basis.

Dior Addict

With main cords of vanilla, tonka bean and sandalwood, this perfume is extremely fragrant and very distinctive. A girl in my office wears it and I know when she’s been in a room or not, because of the traces of the fragrance she leaves behind. I don’t know why that suddenly sounds so creepy…

Diesel Loverdose

Again, I love the packaging of this perfume. The rich purple is perfect for winter and again the vanilla and amber base notes are powerful yet gentle enough for every day wear. I just have one problem with this perfume and that’s actually the heart shaped bottle. It’s beautiful, but not very practical to keep on a nightstand or wherever you keep your perfume. It takes up more space than your average perfume bottle, but even though that’s the case, I love the bottle.

Elizabeth Arden Red Door

With traces of honey and orange blossom, you’d think that this perfume is more of a summery scent, but it’s perfect for autumn with deeper notes of benzoin and cedar. The packaging is also very cute with the top of the bottle looking like a red door.

Will you be trying any of these?

Autumn Beauty Wishlist

As mentioned in my previous post, it is definitely autumn this side of the world and winter is rapidly approaching, which is why I have a winter/autumn wishlist. I’ve chucked out quite a lot of my old clothing from last winter and I’m going to do the same with my beauty products, *sob*, so the time has come to keep an eye out for some replacements.

Zoya nail polish – Miranda

I went for a Zoya manicure last week and I’m extremely impressed with it. It’s a bit on the pricey side, but I’d rather pay a teensy bit extra than have my nails chipping every second day. Ain’t nobody got time fo’ that! I’m in love with the Pixie Dust range. My favourite shade is Miranda.

YSL Touche Eclat Radiant Touch Highlighting Pen

I know I’m a bit late with getting on this bandwagon, but I honestly love how this makes your skin look. I’ve been too afraid to approach any YSL cosmetics counters, because I know I’ll just want everything, but I saw a girl getting her make up done at the counter a week or so ago and the make up artist used this pen on her and my heart just melted.

The Body Shop Grapefruit Shower Gel

Grapefruit is one of my favourite fruits so having it in liquid shower gel form? Win!

The Body Shop Blueberry Body Butter

Winter is around the corner so therefore a good, thick, moisturising body butter will come in handy for when your skin rebels against the cold weather.

Maybelline The Rocket Volum’ Express Mascara

Maybelline mascaras are the bomb. Seriously, they make your lashes look so much thicker and longer. Who can say no to that?

Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy La Fleur

This is more of a spring/summery perfume, but I have to fight to restrain myself from taking all the samples whenever I see it somewhere. It’s so fresh and florally, and the bottle is gorgeous.

Marc Jacobs Bunny Make up Bag

I know this is not entirely a beauty staple, but come on, it has bunnies on and it’s Marc Jacobs!!! Love at first sight.

The Body Shop Honey Bronze Shimmer Lip Balm

I can’t get over the packaging! It creates a gorgeous shimmery shine on your lips and is perfect for just wearing it on its own or over a lipstick for a more glossy finish.

MAC Cosmetics Snapdragon Lipstick

This lipstick is part of MAC’s A Fantasy of Flowers Collection, and it is beautiful. It reminds me quite a lot of Pink Nouveau, but is more purpley. Plus, I really love the name.

Winter Wishlist

The South African winter is creeping closer, and don’t be fooled, it can get pretty cold here. We even get snow in certain parts of the country, but luckily not where I live.

Since the temperature is cooling down, my winter wishlist is heating up!

Trench coat

I love trenches, even though I’ve never actually owned one. They can be quite pricey, which makes me sad since they are gorgeous and so versatile.

Skinny jeans

My current skinny jeans have a hole in them on the leg, and the hole keeps growing, but it doesn’t stop me from wearing the jeans either…

I love wearing beanies in winter. They keep your head warm as well as adding a cute touch to your outfit.

Wooly sweaters

Can you ever have enough of these?!

Plain black leggings

I wear mine to death so they’ve also started looking a bit weathered.

Steve Madden boots

I adore these boots. I saw them in Edgars, but the price tag made my eyes water.

Beanies are great, but what’s not great is hat hair. Headbands keep your head warm without messing up your ‘do.

Peacoats are great, because much like trench coats they are extremely versatile and just fabulous.

A good cup of tea

My favourite hot drink in winter. ❤

What’s on your wishlist?
