Mother’s Day gift ideas

Cue the cheesy cards and ‘I ❤ Mom’ mugs bought in a hurry at a petrol station.

Or if you’re slightly more prepared, a box of chocs and a bouquet of flowers.

But if you’re feeling that maybe your mom already knows what she’ll be getting this year because she gets the same thing every single year, it’s time to have a look at my very special gift guide for your mumsy:

Hummingbird feeder

 If your mom likes gardening like mine does, why not get her a cute bird feeder? I know it’s strange, but my mom would love a gift like this. She also enjoys those little wooden houses for woodpeckers so there’s another brilliant idea for you right there. 😉

A scarf

The weather is getting chilly now so get your mom a beautiful scarf. There are beautiful ones that are mom appropriate at Poetry.

Orchids

Instead of getting her the usual bouquet of flowers, why not get an orchid? They might be slightly more expensive but they’re going to last a lot longer than the bouquet and they’re very elegant. Also, they come in a huge arrangement of colours.

Jewellery

What woman doesn’t like a beautiful necklace or ring?

Handbag

For my mom’s birthday, we got her a stunning navy blue leather handbag from Accessorize. She’s been using the bag every single day since and her birthday was in February. Grab your mom some arm candy this Mother’s Day!

Perfume

Perfume is a gift that might be a tad on the pricey side but it’ll last a long time and every time your mom wears it she’ll think of you. Guess who’ll get the best daughter award?

A book

If your mom likes reading get her a book, but make sure it’s a book on one of her interests.

Cupcakes

If all else fails, bake (or buy) her some cupcakes. Who doesn’t like cupcakes?!

Valentine’s Gift Guide: For him

Hairy, smelly and the ability to lose weight from just watching football on the couch. Yes, boys. Strange creatures at their very best, but yet we still love them.

This guide will ensure that you have a much easier time shopping, and remember to not be afraid to personalise the gift. It’s Valentine’s Day, which automatically gives you the right to talk about your feelings and stuff your pretty face with chocolate so go ahead, spoil your man and take advantage of the previously mentioned fact!

Cologne

Yes, yes, cliché, but it obviously became one for a reason and a good reason at that. I still don’t know how those horrible teddies in cups are such a Valentine’s Day staple.

Go for a scent that you’re quite sure your sweetheart will like, and another thing, make sure he doesn’t think you’re just giving him cologne because you think he doesn’t shower enough. Awkward. I love Paco Rabanne’s One Million.

Alcohol

This gift shouldn’t be to make a date more bearable… Also, when buying booze make sure it isn’t a six pack of beer. Not romantic. Rather try something like whiskey. J&B often has really epic designs on their bottles.

Biltong

This is just delicious. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like biltong regardless of their race, gender or age. In fact, someone send me a pack of lekker biltong for Valentine’s!

Books

A book on your guy’s personal interests will definitely show you care. Dave Grohl’s book is an amazingly good read.

Memorabilia

Whether it’s his favourite football team or band, he’s bound to appreciate some awesome memorabilia. You can get anything from scarves and beanies to t-shirts and key chains online or in specialty stores.

A watch

This could be more on the pricey side and make sure you have the budget though. Rather get this if you’re in a longer, committed relationship.

Gadgets

Whether it’s interesting gadgets or a whole toolbox, guys love their tools. * Cough cough* No pun intended…

Valentine’s Gift Guide: For her

Personally, I think it’s waaaaay easier to get a gift for a girl any time of the year than for a guy. Maybe it’s because I am a girl and I know what girls like or because there are many more things that are acceptable to get for girls than for guys. Whose boyfriend would love a bouquet of flowers? Anyone?

Here are some ideas for girly gifts this Valentine’s Day:

Perfume

It’s something most girls use every day and on special occasions or would like to anyway. Find out what the lady in your life likes and get her a bottle. Smiles all round. On my personal wish list is Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy La Fleur.

Don’t you just love the ad campaign as well?

A handbag

Us girls carry our lives in our handbags and it’s extremely important to make sure that as a carrier of life, it be beautiful. Wow, that sounds like I’m talking about a womb and trust me, it was not the imagery I was going for, but you get what I’m saying. The image below provides a good indication of what styles or types of handbags you get.

You’ll look like a very attentive or fashion savvy shopper if you refer to the exact proper style and casually mention that it’s for your significant other.

Chocolate

I would suggest that this accompanies another gift, unless of course you fill up a 3-meter long box with Lindt chocolate truffles. Nobody will say no to that! The white Lindt is my absolute favourite. It’s seriously yummy.

Jewelry

Jewelry is quite a personal gift, so make sure you know the person quite well before venturing down this path. Many people have quite specific taste when it comes to jewelry and you actually want your Valentine to like what you give them, so make sure you choose something that is pretty and appeals to their taste.

Make-up

Again, you need to know the person well or pay very close attention when they talk about make-up and something specific that they want or need. Don’t buy something boring like face wash! Not that that’s entirely make-up, but make sure the gift is exciting like lipstick. Lipstick is always great.

Pajamas
